People generally desire a certain kind of cleanliness. That is evidenced by a desire for a clean environment, clean food, clean hygiene. While all of that has some value for life, it cannot get us closer to God. The defilement of our sin causes the Holy God to recoil from us. For God to come close to us, we need to be cleansed of our sin. God cleanses and hallows us by the shed blood of Jesus delivered to us by the Means of Grace – Baptism, the Word and Communion.
