At the Transfiguration, Jesus’ glory as God radiates through His human nature. It was a foretaste of Jesus always fully radiating in glory after he went the way of the cross. (Matthew 17:2) The prophet, Moses, gives us a foreshadowing of Jesus in Joseph. Joseph was raised in glory next to Pharaoh after suffering crosses in his own life. (Genesis 41:42-43) That is the life of the Christian baptized into Jesus. The glories of heaven will come after the crosslife for us, too. Joseph also foreshadowed Jesus in another way. Pharaoh gave authority to Joseph’s word when he said, “My people shall be ruled according to your word.” (Genesis 41:40) God declared Jesus’ Word authoritative in the transfiguration: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” (Matthew 17:5) As we listen to his Word, he brings us out of darkness into his marvelous light. (II Peter 1:19)
