Today is the Last Sunday in the Church Year. On this Sunday we look for Jesus to return and bring the Church, purchased with his blood and nurtured by Word and Sacrament, home. In the gospel for the day, Jesus is pictured as a Bridegroom and the Church as 10 Virgins waiting for him to bring us to the joyous heavenly wedding banquet. 5 of the virgins are foolish They do not make use of Word and Sacrament to be prepared by faith to meet the Bridegroom and are shut out in outer darkness. 5 of the virgins are wise. They make use of Word and Sacrament in order that God may keep them prepared by faith to meet the Bridegroom and join him at the heavenly wedding banquet. May we be found among the 5 wise virgins by faithful use of Word and Sacrament and ready for the Bridegroom’s return.
