Old Testament: Jeremiah 9:23-24
Epistle: I John 4:16-21
Gospel: Luke 16:19-31
In Jesus story about the Rich Man and Lazarus, Jesus tells us that when Lazarus, the beggar died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The name Lazarus means “God is my help.” Though it looked like Lazarus had God’s disfavor because of the bad in his life, he looked passed the bad and trusted in God’s Word. The unnamed rich man did not trust in God; instead, he trusted his riches as evidence of God’s favor. Though the rich man trusted them, they could not help him in death. He died and was in torment in Hades. Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets—that is, the Word of God, for it points us to Christ. Only through His death and resurrection are we brought the comfort of life everlasting.
